Helmuth von Moltke was a Prussian military commander and German field marshal known for his brilliant planning. Part of his intelligence on the battlefield came from his lack of ego. He didn't fall in love with his plans, knowing that he would probably have to adapt and change them at some point. He is famous for making the following statement regarding successful leaders' flexibility. "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."
Moltke was always prepared for the inevitable appearance of unforeseen circumstances. He developed backup contingencies and would instantly change his strategies when needed. This adaptability is as important for creating a successful strategic living plan as it is in times of war.
When Has Flexibility Been Good to You?
Think back to a time when life forced you to change course. Life was goingswimmingly, until it wasn't. A significant setback forced you to reassess your plan of action.
You realized your actions would not create the desired outcome you were seeking. So, you developed a new action plan and eventually saw the success you were looking for. This proves the power of adaptability to help you create a positive life experience.
Stop Trying to Force a Square Peg into a Round Hole
Toddlers are given basic building blocks to improve their motor skills and cognitive reasoning. A common early childhood teaching device is a board with holes of basic geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle, etc.) and corresponding pegs or blocks.
At first, they try to force any peg into any hole. Their frustration at being unsuccessful drives them to relentlessly attempt to manipulate pegs into spots where they don't belong and won't fit. They quickly learn that square pegs don't fit in round holes and change their strategy.
You should do the same when change ruins your plans. It makes no sense to shove a square peg into a round hole forcefully. Don't beat your head against a wall and expect a good experience. Successful strategic living means dealing with reality and changing when change is needed.
Adapt. Take some time to review your plan for goal achievement. Consider any influential change and develop a new approach that generates positive results but still helps you progress with your overall life plan.
